국제적인 우주 탐색 활동을 가속화 하는 데 전념하고 있는 아랍에미리트가 인류의 우주 거주 미래를 해결할 아이디어와 개념을 추구하는 모든 연구 분야에서 야심 찬 프로젝트를 지원하는 전용 국제 지원금 펀드인 Space Challenge 출범했다. Space Challenge의 목적은 분야, 배경, 출신에 상관없이 전 세계 곳곳에서 뛰어난 인재를 유치하는 것이다.

아랍에미리트가 우주에서 살고 일하기 위한 독특한 아이디어를 탐색하고, 새로운 사업 모델을 개발하는 데 재정을 지원하고자 Space Challenge에 전용 종자지원금 AED 200만을 지원한다고 발표했다. 이 펀드는 ‘Guaana’라는 차세대 크라우드펀딩 플랫폼을 통해 다양한 분야에서 프로젝트 제안을 모으는 데 사용될 예정이다. ‘Guaana’의 혁신적인 모델은 종자 아이디어에 자금을 지원하는 데 들어간 시간과 노력을 극적으로 단축시킨다.

두바이 미래재단(Dubai Future Foundation, DFF)이 설립한 Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Accelerated Research가 자체적인 국제 과제 중 첫 번째로 ‘우주 탐험’을 선정했다.

두바이 미래재단 CEO Khalfan Belhoul는 “아랍에미리트는 국제 우주 경쟁을 주도할 야심 찬 경로를 설정했으며, 2117 화성 프로젝트에 따라 화성에 최초의 도시를 건설할 계획”이라며 “우주 연구는 인류의 지식과 생존 탐색에서 다음 논리적 단계이자, 인류 문화, 사회 및 경제를 보전할 발전된 수단이다. 오늘 출범한 Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Settlement Challenge의 목적은 창의적인 인재, 색다른 아이디어, 혁신적인 디자인 및 연구를 위한 지원을 제공하는 것”이라고 말했다.

우주 도전은 세 가지 부문으로 구성된다. 그 중 첫 번째인 ‘우주 정착지’의 목적은 최소 100명이 거주할 수 있으며, 지속가능하고, 번성하는 우주 정착지를 지원할 위치를 위한 계획을 세우는 것이다. 이 부문은 인간적 요인을 고려하면서 건설 자동화, 전력, 식량, 물, 냉난방과 같은 문제를 탐색한다.

두 번째 도전 부문인 ‘테라포밍 및 우주 생태’는 인간이 살 만한 장기적인 환경을 구축하고, 달, 화성, 소행성 및 궤도 서식지 근처의 오프-플래닛(off-planet) 천제를 테라포밍 하는 전략을 구상한다.

세 번째 도전 부문인 ‘경제학, 사업 모델 및 거버넌스’는 최적의 경제학과 자원 활용을 위한 사업 계획을 수립하고, 우주에서 상업 활동을 하는 데 관심 있는 민간 부문 파트너를 파악하는 시나리오를 구상한다. 또한, 이 도전은 우주에서의 평화적인 정착에 관한 사회 인식을 도모하는 국가 정책을 제안함으로써 좋은 거버넌스를 보장하고자 한다.

신청서 접수는 이달 10일부터 한 달간 진행될 예정이다.

UAE Speeds up Efforts to Build Settlements in Space Through the Mohammed Bin Rashid Center for Future Accelerated Research's First Challenge

DUBAI, UAE, February 10, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- In its commitment to accelerating global space exploration activities, the UAE launches the Space Challenge with a dedicated global grant fund that supports ambitious projects from all areas of research pursuing ideas and concepts to unlock the future of human space habitation. The challenge aims to attract brilliant minds from all around the world regardless of discipline, background, or origin.

The UAE has announced a dedicated seed grant of AED2 million towards the Space Challenge to bankroll proposals that explore novel ideas and develop new business models for living and working in space. The funds will be used to solicit project proposals from diverse disciplines through a next-generation crowdfunding platform called "Guaana", whose innovative model dramatically reduces the time and effort required to fund seed ideas.

Established by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) - the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Accelerated Research has dedicated space exploration as one of it's first global challenges.

Dubai Future Foundation's CEO Khalfan Belhoul said: "The UAE has set itself on an ambitious path to lead the global space race, establishing the first city on Mars as per the 2117 Mars Project. Space research is the logical next step in humanity's search for knowledge and survival, and an advanced means to preserve human cultures, societies and economies. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Settlement Challenge we are launching today is designed to provide support for creative minds, unconventional ideas, innovative designs and research."

The space challenge is composed of three categories, the first of which revolves around Space Settlement, aims to develop plans for locations that could support a thriving sustainable settlement in space accommodating at least 100 people. It explores matters like construction automation, power, food, water, heating and cooling, all the while taking the human factor into consideration.

The second challenge - Terraforming & Space Ecology - looks into creating livable long-term environments, formulating strategies for the responsible terraforming of off-planet bodies near the Moon, Mars, asteroids and other orbital habitats.

Challenge number three - Economics, Business Model & Governance - seeks to develop business plans for optimal economics and resource utilization, writing scenarios that identify private-sector partners interested in conducting commercial activities in space. The challenge also seeks to ensure good governance by proposing national policies that promote society's awareness of peaceful settlement in space.
