In a phone call, Shoukry also expressed Egypt's anticipation for ongoing coordination with South Korea in priority Arab and African issues on the UNSC’s agenda. 

Tae-yul, previously the South Korean ambassador to the UN, was appointed as the new foreign minister in December 2023.

Moreover, South Korea became a non-permanent member of the UNSC in January for a two-year term, along with Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia.

The UNSC comprises 15 states, five permanent members and the other ten non-permanent. 

Gaza war 
 

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that the call also addressed security and humanitarian developments in Gaza and international efforts to end the war there. 

Shoukry praised South Korea's support for the recent Arab draft resolution at the UNSC and its ongoing funding for UNRWA and international relief efforts.  

He expressed Egypt's reliance on South Korea playing a role in pushing for a complete ceasefire and immediate humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza.  

Tae-yul commended, in turn, Egypt's efforts to halt the war in Gaza and enhance aid access for its residents. He affirmed his country's continued support for peace and stability in the Middle East to prevent the conflict from escalating further. 

With the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan on Monday, Shoukry called for intensifying efforts to reach a comprehensive ceasefire deal. 

This comes as weeks of talks involving negotiators from Egypt, Qatar and the United States have failed to achieve a truce in Gaza before the fasting month of Ramadan, which started this week. 

The Israeli attacks in Gaza since 7 October have killed over 31,184 people and injured 72,889 others, according to the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza on Tuesday. 

The ministry says 72 percent of casualties are women and children. 

During the call, both sides hailed the successful partnership between Egypt and South Korea in various priority sectors for both countries.  

They also discussed promoting cooperation through bilateral mechanisms and reviewed ways to enhance economic cooperation and attract investments. In this regard, Shoukry stressed that Egypt was eager to attract more Korean investments, particularly in areas where Korea possesses extensive expertise that meets Egyptian needs.
