Under the motto ‘The Word Brings Us Together,’ the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) in Cairo launched the 2024 Korean Literature Month event to introduce Korean literature during Ramadan.

As part of the KCC's celebration of its 10th anniversary in Egypt, the event, which spans 10 March - 10 April, features an exhibition of Korean traditional folk tales (in Arabic) and youth novels.

It also features a writing workshop and DVD screenings of adaptations of Korean literature and holds a discussion panel with Korean author Hong Buyong.

Buyong is a renowned Korean writer who majored in Korean literature at the graduate school of Dongguk University. She has authored numerous literary works, including I Married a Ghost and Dad for Rent. The comedy series 'Ba Ba Gah' (Dad Has Come) is an Egyptian adaptation of Buyong's Dad for Rent. The series stars comedian Akram Hosny and currently airs on Egypt's satellite TV channel  DMC and platforms Watch It and Shahid.

The panel with Buyong is scheduled for 27 March at the KCC, where she will review her novel Dad for Rent and read some excerpts to the audience. A Q&A session will follow. Moreover, Buyong will conduct a 15-minute writing workshop for Korean language students at the Korean Language Department at the faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University, the first department of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa founded in 2005.

Since 2022, the centre has organized K-Book events in collaboration with the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea (KPIPA), a governmental organization under the Korean Ministry of Cultures, Sports, and Tourism.

Established in 2014, the Korea Cultural Centre in Cairo aims, among many things, to promote Korean literature and the Korean publishing industry. 

Egyptians visiting the centre during the event can speak face-to-face with Korean novelists, including Kim Un-su and Jeong Yu-jeong. 

The centre also plans to cooperate with local institutions and publishers to expand the readership of Korean literature in the Arab world by encouraging the translation of Korean literature into Arabic.

Director of the KCC, Oh Sung-ho, said, "Literature plays a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries," adding, "The popularity of Korean literature is growing as more people in Egypt learn Korean."

He hoped those interested in exploring Korea's rich history and culture would do so through literature.
